Sandra's Backpackers Hostel

It was a really pleasant experience. The owners are so kind and friendly also. I will definitely come back next time I’m in town.

Excellent continent breakfast provided room are basic n request for towelsKitchen reasonable sizeOverall goodOff street road parking

Very good location and comfortable for the price

I had a great stay here and it was brilliant. I would definitely come stay again.

We booked this hostel after reading some of the more negative reviews, however as a very open minded bunch of friends, wanting that genuine hostel experience, but expecting “the worst” place.

We were welcomed promptly after arrival to be shown around the hostel and all its facilities and to be told about breakfast time ect, by a lovely welcoming gentleman.
After a few local drams (because ynot!!!) in a close by pub, we headed to the common room that was just like my living room at home, oh it was ever so welcoming, with everything you want, cards , Jenga and information books, perfect for after a long drive or walk to reach Sandras.
It was soon bedtime where had a magnificent room with great ventilation, flat screen tv, with en-suite shower/poop , and a comfy bed.

Ignore the bad reviews , think those ones got hostel and hotel mixed up, expecting some kind of butler service at there usual la-de-da posh accommodation, you don’t get much for £20 these days, trust me! (Maybe a couple of dances down the local gentleman club) but seriously, £20’s £20 it’s a blooming bargain!

Hope you enjoy your stay when you book yourself in to Sandra’s

Solid hostel. Cheap as, good common room, comfy and a warm welcome.
Came despite the bad reviews and not sure what they expected from a hostel, defo written by poshos . Would recommend to anyone.
Sandras is damage

Walking down the lovely corridors, it reminded me of a 5 star hotel. The kitchen was great, homely. When we turned up we phoned the number for the receptionist to come down, he came down as fast as a racing car. Great service and the wheat a bix was great. 5 STARS !

After a long weary day of traveling was greeted by a lovely receptionist who gave us the most wonderful tour. Room comes with built in strobe light and en suite what more could you ask for? The toasted bread was some of the best I’ve ever eaten

It's half the price of anywhere else nearby and as the Scrabster ferries cancelled for the weekend we were in need of a bed so we turned to Sandra's, put us up for 2 nights in a double en-suite. For the price you can't expect much, all as we wanted was a clean bed and a hot shower - that's exactly what we got with a bit of breakfast chucked in if you wanted it. The owners are friendly and helpful. Will be back of in the area again.

Cosy ground floor twin room with en-suite bathroom, offering the best shower (in comparison to our other bookings during the week of our travels). Self-contained upstairs kitchen and dining area, ideal for preparing our own meals. Very economical booking - and basic (but more than sufficient) breakfast also provided including tea/coffee; bread; milks & alternatives - oat, soya; cereals; yogurt. Owners very hospitable and full of great stories from their personal travels. Well located - no more than 5 mins drive down to Thurso Beach. And 10 mins drive down to Scrabster, for the ferry crossing to Orkney. For budget travellers, dormitory accommodation is also available.

Sandra's Backpackers Visit

Exactly what I expected for a hostel. In a good location. Stayed 1 night whilst travelling through for early ferry. Simple, straightforward rooms, clean, if a bit dated. Handy well equipped kitchen facility with ample breakfast items to self serve. James the host was very helpful, friendly and kind. Solo female traveller, I felt safe. My dog was welcomed too. Thank you James, I'll be back!

Absolutely fine for a cheap one night stay!

An older-style backpackers, for the budget-conscious. Great service - James, the owner and host, was very friendly and helpful. Helped us find a taxi, VERY late at night, for the following morning, and helped us with other transport issues. A mine of info about the town and region, & in general great to talk to. Very cheap washing and drying service in-house. Good stuff!

Thumbs up!

I stayed for 2 nights in a private room with en-suite on the ground floor.
Had to call the hostel on arrival and was met by the host, who showed me around everything and pointed out some eating options around the town.
The kitchen upstairs was well setup and the included breakfast was great,
Towels available. Popular fish and chips place across the road. Bus to John O'Groats leaves from the top of the road a minute's walk away. Train station was 5-10 minutes walk from the hostel. Tesco supermarket also close by.
Wi-Fi only worked when upstairs, was the only downside.

Good backpackers/budget accommodation option in the center of Thurso.

Brilliant hostel in the heart of Thurso

We had a very different experience from the last few visitors. We'd been due to camp but the rain was so torrential we made a last minute change of plan. We called the number on the door and a friendly gent checked us in, explained the C19 rules and showed us to a warm, cosy room. Heating was on and we soon dried out, grabbed some excellent fish and chips from over the road and had a great night's sleep with not a boy racer to be heard. Shower pressure was a bit low and the breakfast experience of being served everything wasn't the most relaxed but I wouldn't hesitate to visit again.

Comfortable and cosy

The stay was exactly what I needed, a good night's sleep in a solid hostel. It was offseason when I went, so not too rowdy, but I can imagine it's a great place for a party during the season. The kitchen is massive and has tons of stuff to cook your own meal - the lounge is connected so a good place to drink with some mates. The owner is super nice as well! I would definitely stay here again if I ever got the opportunity. Thanks team!

Great little hostel on the main Street

It has a good relation cost-comfort.All areas seemed pretty clean, nice kitchen with utensils to use.To improve, maybe bigger beds as they are a little small for two persons. The room is turned to the main street, and you may wake up in the middle of the night with road traffic noise, specially in the summer, when you leave your window open.

Stay was okay. Nothing spectacular. Basic but it’s what you’d expect for the price. The shared communal kitchen area was nice, clean and had plenty of facilities for you to use and communal breakfast options also.
