Goerlitz is a small town with a long history right on the Polish border. You can walk over the bridge into Poland in a couple of minutes. Staying at the Alt Goerlitz was the perfect choice - close to the old town with friendly mainly Polish staff, large rooms and what a breakfast. The rooms were good and furnished with older pieces of furniture apart from the bed of course. But the breakfast was exceptional. The variety of dishes offered was not something I'd experienced anywhere in any place and all of it was beautifully made and presented. It kept me going on Goerlitz's cobbled streets for hours. There's plenty to do and see in this small town and in Bautzent, another small historic town 40 minutes away by train with a prison used by the Nazis, the Russians and then finally the East Germans for all manner of crimes and non-crimes in the 20th century.. When the wall came down in 1989 it's doors were opened and prisoners walked free. This area of Germany was part of the former GDR and is full of stories and places of interest. The Alt Goerlitz was our base for 3 nights and was excellent in all respects and modestly priced too.
