Quiet a lot of people from Germany tell you stupid things of the East part of that country. I recommend especially the east part of Germany like Quedlinburg, Dresden and other destinations. People here are a lot friendlier and more open minded than in the west part of Germany (a lot of arrogance and rip off). Here in the east especially in Quedlinburg you'll experience the real German hospitality. Everybody is friendly, helpful and will have a smile for you.
