Lovely place to stay. Staff we met Mike and Jonathan were friendly pleasant and helpful.

It was such a wonderful experience. Lovely staff, amazing beer, superb breakfast (the best English I have had for years). Charming /historic and quirky. Loved it.

We checked in to this beautiful old inn, and were greeted by owner Johnathan, we were shown to our room and told if we needed anything just ask. Being the winter the kitchen is closed Monday and Tuesday which Johnathan apologised for, we replied it’s absoulutly fine. He told us of the local Chinese just up the road and said please feel free to bring it back to our room to eat, which we did.Excellent Chinese takeaway.We slept like logs and woke to have full breakfast that Jonathan cooked which was lovely fresh and hot.Will be booking again without a doubt.

We really enjoyed our stay here. Didn't get to sleep til late as there was a private function but this isn't anybody's fault we were staying in a pub and expected noise. The room was lovely, very nice coffee! The staff were friendly and polite. No real parking available but we managed to find a space fairly close by.The kids loved the room and we would definitely stay again.

A quaint friendly little local pub with B&B, the en suite room was clean and comfortable with a view over the front of the pub and village. There was not much space for parking, and they didn’t cater much if you have a gluten free diet, but tried their best to accommodate , overall a very nice stay, would definitely return and recommend

We decided to book here for the Cartmel races and we glad we did. The Engine is a beautiful old traditional English pub, sat outside next to the river is very tranquil. Good selection of wines and beers are on offer and the bar area is very cosy.
We stayed for one night, our room was a good size and a decent size bed.
Our host was exceptional, he really helped us out when we got stuck at night, so with this above and beyond service I rate the Engine 5 stars..
We would definitely stay here again.

Lovely homely welcoming Inn

Would definitely stay here again

An interesting venue with character. Being an industrial archaeology fan, I was happy with the accommodation - the building stems from the late 18th century and is named after a Boulton & Watt steam engine installed just before 1790 across the stream in the former Cark cotton mill. This mill has a history in its own right and was one of the largest in Lancashire at the time - unfortunately it burnt down in 1935, leaving no remains to be subsequently "gentrified". I was intrigued by the inn's history but my wife was more interested in the quality of the accommodation which she thought needed some TLC. However, we had the largest room in the inn at the front and there was plenty of hot water, often lacking in older buildings. Unfortunately the kitchen was closed and so we didn't experience the claimed Home Cooking. Breakfast was modest although fine for my wife who rarely eats more than a banana (which she provided) and I never "do a full English". All in all a memorable experience for one interested in industrial history!

An inn of character but....?

Stayed overnight with friends as a halfway stop-off on the Bay Cycle Way and we were made extremely welcome and comfortable. We had a lovely room, fabulous food and beer, and a very friendly and accommodating host and barstaff. Our stay here was one of many highlights of a wonderful weekend. Jonathan also provided safe and secure storage for our bikes and we felt that nothing was too much trouble. We were looked after superbly, I would highly recommend and hope to visit again.

A Short But Wonderfully Memorable Stay

Have returned from a long weekend staying at the Engine.  Had a great time, the pub is excellent with great food and beer.  The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them.The location is excellent, about a mile walk to the centre of Cartmel, 10 min drive to Grange over Sands and of course near to all the lake district has to offer.

I’ve visited a few times now and can highly recommend as a cosy, friendly pub whether you want just drinks or food. We visited this month and after a long walk around the area, we needed somewhere comfy to relax and eat. There was a hand sanitiser station on arrival and a QR code to scan for Track & Trace, we had prebooked our table and were sat in the snug. My partner had the beef roast dinner and I had the falafel burger, the staff are friendly and helpful and the food was fresh and tasty. I also treated myself to a slice of gluten free blackcurrant cheesecake which came with a decorative chocolate sauce and a gorgeous ball of ice cream. Love this place and will be visiting again.

Perfect pub lunch 

Been here again tonight, we stayed in cark for 4 nights went here a few times in afternoon returning for food in evening then returned again a few days later for a Sunday roast each time nice relaxed atmosphere warm hosts and staff . Fab times with fire roaring away in this cosy place and my dogs loved it especially when chef brings meat for them , food was delicious , I had the home made pie with mash first night and roast the second I was also lucky to try the cheese cake , sticky toffee pudding & the fudge cake ( tried a bit of every one else’s) and could highly recommend all but sticky toffee pud my fave 

Fab pub , so good we returned 

We were attending a tandem skydive event nearby so we booked in the engine.
The beer festival was a pleasant surprise some nice local Beers on tap, there was also a nice barbecue outside.
The owner Jonathan was around and made himself known and seemed a pleasant chap.
Bedrooms were smallish but clean and the breakfast was good,
Only possible minus was, parking is at a bit of a premium especially if the pub is full, but otherwise nice pub/b&b in a good location.
