Hotel Angerer Alm, Hochgurgl – A Stay That Truly Overdelivers We stayed at Hotel Angerer Alm in the second week of March for our annual ski trip with friends, and what a find it turned out to be. We chose Hochgurgl and this hotel for its great location, competitive pricing, and wanted the charm of an Austrian family-run hotel with personality. It’s fair to say it exceeded expectations on almost every level. Let me start with the standout: the food. Wow, 10/10. Quite simply, exceptional. Every evening we were treated to a five-plus course dinner with choices for soup and mains, and each dish was beautifully prepared, generous, and genuinely fine dining standard. I would comfortably say it surpassed many London restaurants. The waiting team delivered everything seamlessly, and we found ourselves looking forward to dinner each day with real excitement. The kitchen and team deserve huge credit. Breakfast was equally impressive. A wide selection as you’d expect, but elevated with thoughtful touches like homemade yoghurt shots and honey straight from the comb. Normally I tire of hotel breakfasts after a few days, but not here. The bar area was warm and inviting, a perfect spot to unwind after skiing, and very well serviced. As a wine enthusiast, I had requested the wine list in advance and was delighted with the selection. There are some real gems – notably a Grüner Veltliner Lamm 2022, which was outstanding. One of the highlights of each day was ending on the sun terrace. Sheltered from the wind and a real sun trap, it was the perfect place for a beer, tea, or glass of wine after skiing. Rooms were spacious, warm, and comfortable, with excellent beds and wonderfully hot showers and baths – exactly what you want after a long day on the slopes. The hotel is family-run, and the team are consistently friendly, attentive, and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble, including arranging a taxi for a day trip to Sölden. Location-wise, it’s hard to beat. A short 100m walk and a few steps up take you straight into the chairlift. At the end of the day, it’s equally convenient, with wc facilities at the lift station before a quick return to the spacious and warm ski room. Hochgurgl itself is smaller but brilliantly snow-sure due to its altitude. There’s more than enough to challenge and enjoy, including some great off-piste opportunities near the piste edges. We hired a guide for a day and covered a huge amount of terrain. A day trip to Sölden is also highly recommended – a vast ski area (and a James Bond filming location), with fast, efficient lifts and something for everyone. Across both resorts, lift queues were virtually non-existent – rarely more than a minute all week. All in all, a fantastic trip. A brilliant hotel with outstanding food, a warm and friendly atmosphere, and a superb location. We will absolutely return – in fact, I’m already thinking about those dinners again.
