Regensburg was a convenient stop for us on a long drive from the UK to Croatia. I used Booking.com to select a hotel in the city the morning we were travelling. I was able to reserve the room for payment on checkout by using a card to secure the booking. As we were travelling across countries, we had no mobile data to pick up the personalised check in instructions sent by the owner via email. When we arrived the reception was closed, and so had to phone the number left on the front door for help – which arrived and got us settled with very little fuss. The hotel is at the end of a small street in what seems to be a healthcare area of the city. Ample free parking was available on the road behind the building the hotel is in. As with most German towns, the area is very quiet at night. I’d scanned some of the available reviews briefly before booking, so was a bit confused by what I was going to find, but was extremely pleased on seeing the room. Each room is named after a type of flower, and individually decorated with motifs related to that plant. Ours translated as “Geranium”, and had a nice image of some pelargoniums over the bed. The room was really quite special. An enormous amount of planning and thought has gone into creating a large, convenient and above-all fully accessible space. Every area of the room can be accessed by a wheelchair user, and surfaces are also at a convenient height for anyone that would need to use them. The en-suite shower (wet)room is also very large, and also fully accessible for people with restricted mobility. Although the design has taken the needs of wheelchair users very seriously, the comfort or “feel” of the space is in no way compromised by this attention to detail. The quality of the fitting of the space, and of the fittings themselves is as high as it possibly could be, and there is a feeling of luxury throughout. The double bed was outstandingly comfortable – and as is very common in Germany was made of two individual mattresses – the linen was also worth praising. Everything in the whole place was spotlessly clean. Having had an amazing shower after a great night’s sleep it was off to breakfast - which was something else. We were shown into a room near reception as though we were old friends, and reassured that coffee was on its way. The breakfast was truly superb. We were shown to an adjacent room laid out with a cold buffet. This included typical German bread rolls as well as home-made, home baked breads, really tasty hard and soft cheeses, beautiful cold meats, fruit salad etc. While this sounds pretty typical, it is worth saying that the quality and taste of everything was as you would wish to present to an honoured guest in your own home. And we felt like honoured guests. The owner is a reasonably young woman with fluent English who clearly likes people. We could have stayed to chat for ages, but our long journey ahead meant we needed to move on. As this is a small, family owned and run hotel, you are not going to get 24 hr concierge service, room service etc. You are however going to be able to rest in a delightful, accessible and very comfortable space and have a wonderful breakfast for the price of a night in a budget hotel in the UK. If you are going to Regensburg, do not hesitate to stay here.
