La Casona de Escalada 

La Casona Escalada is a small hotel in the village of Escalada in northern Spain between Santander and Burgos to the south. We stayed there as a stop over on our way from Santander to Southern Spain. It was an ideal first stop after getting of the ferry as by that time it was getting on for 6.30pm. We arrived at about 8.00pm.and received a really warm welcome by the owners daughter, who I think is called Angela. The hotel is a very old property which has been renovated to a fabulous standard and it actually feels like a traditional medieval house, with all the modern conveniences.. Angela made us a really nice meal of bread and cold meats even though we hadn't booked an evening meal and it was fabulous. There isn't much else in the village however I believe there is a bar in the village as well as the one in the hotel. There is a lovely 1km walk to the next village down by the river which does have a restaurant. There was a lot of choice for breakfast, both hot and cold, and plenty of coffee. We were so impressed with the hotel we booked again for the homeward journey a month later. We were travelling by motorbike and they allowed us to park it in their secure garden overnight. The bedrooms are very cosy and the one we stayed in on our return had a beautiful balcony overlooking the river and mountains. Would definitely recommend it to anyone wanted a quiet rural location. Probably not for someone wanting any nightlife although I do believe they have events and fiestas in the village at certain times. They also have a museum in the hotel of medieval amour and weapons. The owner re enacts battles and competes all over the world apparently. It's actually very interesting. Would definitely stay again.
